Chinese regulators finalized first-of-its-kind rules to govern generative artificial intelligence as it looks to speed up oversight of the speedily growing AI technology.
The powerful Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) expressed that it worked with many other regulators to come up with its new rules that will be effective from August 15.
Generative AI is a rapidly growing area of tech in which AI services can generate content like text or images. ChatGPT is the most famous example which allows users to give commands to the chatbot and get replies to questions.
These services are trained on massive amounts of data. But, ChatGPT has raised a wave of rival services, raising thoughts among global regulators regarding possible risks around the technology.
Chinese technology companies have jumped on the bandwagon, declaring plans and unveiling their own generative artificial intelligence services.
China tightly controls the domestic internet and is watching the development of AI closely. Chinese regulators are concerned regarding the potential of these services to create content that may go against China’s ideology.
The CAC rules provide technology companies with a framework to work with.
The CAC said, “The rules will only apply to generative AI services that are available to the public. Generative AI services will need to get a license to operate. Providers of these services must conduct security assessments on their products and ensure user information is secure. Generative AI services in China must also adhere to the “core values of socialism.”
The CAC added, “The regulation aims to encourage innovative applications of generative AI and support the development of related infrastructure like semiconductors.”
